Revised Deworming Schedule Based on Fecal Egg Counts

November 2009

This schedule is designed for horses 1 year of age and older.  This schedule will be tailored to each individual horse/farm.  All horses will be dewormed at least three times during the first year of this new program.

Deworming based on fecal egg count

All horses dewormed with Ivermectin unless otherwise directed

Eqvalan, Equell, Ivercare, Zimectrin

Optional Fecal Egg Counts on all horses

July 2010: ALL horses dewormed with Ivermectin

Fecal egg counts on all horses

This is the last fecal of the year.  It determines the effectiveness of the program.

Horses in Class 1 and Class 2: Deworm with Ivermectin/Praziqutantel for tapeworms

Class 3: Deworm with *Moxidectin/Praziquantel

*Please note Quest has a lower safety margin than Ivermectin products, meaning that it requires a more exact dose.  Therefore it is not recommended in young, pregnant, debilitated or older horses.  The veterinarians will recommend Quest for specific cases.

The parasite class will be based on the number of eggs per gram in the fecal sample.  The goal of this program is to streamline the deworming process.  Most horses are being dewormed six times per year at this time.  Studies indicate that less than 5% of horses will need dewormed that frequently.  This program is designed to lessen the parasite resistance to the deworming products we have available.

Class 1: less than 200 epg

Class 2: 200-500 epg

Class 3: greater than 500 epg

 (epg = eggs per gram)

Fecal samples can be dropped off at the HVA office for testing at any time. NO appointment is needed. One fecal ball is plenty for testing. Fecal containers are available at HVA's front desk at no charge. The fecal test is $15 per sample. Fecal samples should be stored in a refrigerator if it will not be dropped off the same day.  Samples should be submitted within 36 hours of collection.  This program is new and very different from the common deworming practices but if used correctly, will keep our deworming products effective.

Recommended Foal Deworming Program

Foals are more susceptible to roundworm (ascarid) infestations than adults who develop a resistance over time.  Since worm burdens can be high in foals, they may require monthly dewormings as described below.  Due to a foal's susceptibility to parasitism, we do not recommend including them in the need based deworming program highlighted above until they are two years of age.

Foals can also be given daily fed dewormer in combination with Ivermectin products, but it is suggested that they are weaned first before starting this program.  This is to insure that the foal is ingesting the proper dosage of dewormer.

The drug company Pfizer offers the benefit of funding a colic surgery, if your horse colics and requires surgery while following their daily dewormer program.  This program also involves following specific exam and vaccine recommendations and cost $50.00 per year.  Please ask one of our veterinarians for the details regarding this program or visit Pfizer PreventiCare program at https://www.equinepreventicare.com/default.aspx .
